NEWSLETTER
December 2009

Summer has arrived and Christmas is just around the corner. The focus at this time of the year is friends, family and food which, for some people, can result in the yearly festive season weight gain. To survive the festive season:

Enjoy it all in moderation - There's no food that you should avoid altogether, as long as you don't over do it.
Keep up the exercise - Be lazy for a day if you will, but after that get outside and go for a walk.
Shop wisely - As you shop for Christmas food, put some healthy items into the shopping basket as well.

Santa's Secret

Christmas is a very demanding time of the year for Santa but this year he got in shape for it with a fitness blitz. Santa is now as fit as he's ever been and he has decided to share his secret with you. Follow this routine 3 times a week to boost your metabolism, and complement it with at least 2 aerobic sessions such as jogging, swimming, walking or cycling.

Warm Up

To warm up skip or jog slowly for about five minutes.

Cardiovascular Workout (15 to 20 minutes)

Choose from a brisk walk, cycling or skipping.

Strength Workout (3 to 5 sets)

Lunges are an excellent lower body exercise as most of the muscles in your legs are involved - glutes (buttocks), quads (thighs), hamstrings and calves.

Take one big step forward . Bend both knees and lower your body towards the floor, keeping the front knee and back knee at 90 degree angles. Slowly push back up (pushing your weight through your front heel) to starting position. Change legs and aim for 12 to 15 lunges each set.

Push-ups use most of the muscles in your upper body - chest, triceps (back of your arms), shoulders and core.

Balance on your toes (or knees) with hands just wider than your shoulders. Your body should be in a straight line from head to toes (or knees). Slowly bend your arms (elbows pointing out) and lower your body to the floor, stopping when your elbows are at 90 degrees and then pushing your body back up. Don't stick your butt up in the air or sag your lower back. Aim for 12 to 15 push-ups each set.

The hover (or plank or bridge) is an exercise that works the abs, back, arms and legs.

Lie face down with elbows resting on floor next to chest. Contract the stomach and lift your body up with the elbows underneath the shoulders. The pelvis in conjunction with the spine and the knees should be in a straight line. Don't stick your butt up in the air or sag your lower back. Hold for about 20 seconds and eventually aim to hold for a minute.

Goal Setting For 2010

I have started asking my clients to jot down three goals they would like to achieve from their training over the next 12 months.  However, weight loss cannot a goal - but it is a direct outcome from their three goals.

For example, if you want to reduce your body fat by 5%, then your three goals over the next 12 months might be:

  • Commit to a minimum of 3 x 30-45 min cardio sessions per week;

  • Have at least 3 alcohol-free days each week; and

  • Do the City to Surf.

Write down the 3 goals on a piece of paper and stick it on your fridge to keep reminding you.

Christmas Present Ideas

Exercise Bands

Exercise bands are great for general strength and conditioning and rehabilitation or injury prevention. They are cheap, compact and lightweight, which makes them ideal for home workouts and you can easily pack them in your suitcase for travel.

Most bands are colour-coded according to tension level (e.g., light, medium, heavy, very heavy) and can easily accommodate all fitness levels.

Gift Vouchers

A gift voucher is a great present to help someone start a fitness regime and get into a healthy lifestyle. Sometimes the hardest part of a fitness program is actually getting started. A gift voucher is a fantastic way to get someone you care about underway. It's a non-intimidating and non-threatening way for them to experience the positive benefits that regular training can bring.

The gift vouchers can be specially designed to cater for all your needs, requests and budget. To order a gift voucher, simply send an email to info@AndrewHo.com.au.

Note: Gift vouchers must be used within 3 months from the date of issue and cannot be redeemed for cash.
