NEWSLETTER
October 2009

Daylight savings starts on Sunday 4th October in NSW, Victoria, SA, Tasmania and the ACT.

This means that there is an extra hour of daylight at the end of the day. And with summer just around the corner, use the extra hour to get in shape for the beach and the outdoors.

Takeaway Meals

Australians spend about 10% of the food budget on takeaways, which are a quick and easy option when we don't have enough time to cook. However, most takeaways are high in kilojoules and often have too much fat and salt for healthy eating.

Recently, Choice (the largest consumer organisation in Australia) examined the nutritional composition of a wide range of popular takeaway meals from local Chinese, Thai, Italian and Indian restaurants, as well as some major food chains. A “traffic light” system was used as a guide to the nutritional quality of these meals in terms of total fat, saturated fat and salt.

Red means the food is high in something you should try to cut down on, so it should only be eaten occasionally.
Amber means the food isn't high or low so it's an OK choice – but you shouldn't eat too much of it or too often.
Green means the food is low in fat or sodium. The more green lights, the healthier the choice.

When it comes to choosing individual dishes, here are some pointers for picking the healthier options.
