NEWSLETTER
October 2010

Daylight savings starts on Sunday October 3 in NSW, Victoria, SA, Tasmania and the ACT.

daylight savings

This means you now have an extra hour of daylight to do some exercise after work if you struggle get up early in the morning.

When Is The Best Time To Exercise?

This is a question I constantly get asked. The best time of the day to work out is the time of day that you will most likely to actually work out.

If you are not a morning person and will never consistently wake up to exercise, then morning is not a good time for you. However, if your day is full of distractions, then perhaps a morning workout is your ideal time.

Spend some time looking at your daily and weekly routine and determine what is most convenient for you.

The bottom line is whether you exercise 30 minutes in the morning, 30 minutes over your lunch hour or 30 minutes after work, you are still getting 30 minutes of exercise in. The key is consistency.

Fat v Muscle

What weighs more...a kilo of fat or a kilo of muscle? OK that was a trick question - a kilo is a kilo. But have a look at the picture below - showing a kilo of fat (yellow) and a kilo of muscle (red). The question now is which one takes up more room in your body, even though the number on the scale may not change?

The moral of the story...don't use the bathroom scale!!! Use the belt test instead.

Shame List

It's incredible that there are businesses that thrive on creating unhealthy foods and yet they can always find a way to market it. The first business on my Shame List is a restaurant called Killa Burger Grill, located in Sydney's south west. Their "famous" Killa Burger is a staggering 30cm wide in diameter - that's around the same size as a medium pizza!!

Amazingly, they have a promotion named the Killa Challenge, which requires a person to eat their Killa Burger together with large chips (called Wicked Chips), 1.25 litres of soft drink (Killa Drink) and large fried ice cream (Killa Soft Serve). If you can complete the challenge within 60 minutes you win a prize and also get your name on their Hall of Fame. It didn't surprise me that there is no nutritional information on their website, but I'm guessing that the Killa Challenge (appropriately named) would provide enough kilojoules (calories) for a few days!!.

Fast Food Guide

We all know how unhealthy fast food can be but some people still eat it. Personal trainers, nutritionists, dietitians and other health professionals are constantly fighting a losing battle in recommending the average person to eliminate fast food from their diets.

Fast food can often be high in saturated fat, salt and kilojoules (or calories), and low in fibre, vitamins and minerals. Therefore, excessive consumption of fast food can increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

I've put together a Fast Food Guide, which looks at the menus of the three biggest fast food chains in Australia (McDonald’s, Hungry Jack’s and KFC). Hopefully the guide will allow you to make "healthier" choices should you decide to eat at these restaurants.

If you would like a copy of this guide, just complete the details below and it's yours.
